OSTRICH FEATHERS

Stylish and elegant, Ostrich feathers are highly sought after for decorative purposes and have been used to create impressive headdresses and costumes for the Moulin Rouge and Rio Carnival for many decades. The most beautiful and symmetrical ostrich feather plumes are used – the white primary feathers from the wings of the male ostrich.

Recently, ostrich feathers have also become popular in the Wedding & Catering industries. The white feathers are used to decorate rooms or tables and small feathers dyed in bright colours are used as an alternative to confetti. The Prince of Wales's feathers is the heraldic badge of the Prince of Wales. It consists of three white ostrich feathers emerging from a gold coronet. A ribbon below the coronet bears
the motto Ich dien (German for "I serve").

FEATHER DUSTERS

Ostrich feathers are particularly suited for use in feather dusters. The ostrich feather is soft, flexible and durable which makes it suitable for dusting even delicate objects.

The feathers of the flightless ostrich lack the tiny hooks (barbicles) that tie the barbs and barbules
(the main & secondary branches of the feather) of normal feathers together, stiffening them for flight. This 'looseness' of the feather causes it to build a static charge when rubbed across a surface, attracting dust. The attracted dust can then be shaken out or rinsed off. Ostrich feathers are non-allergenic.
